So director Simon Kinbeg told Total Film that despite introducing aliens to the merry world of Marvel‘s mutants, X-Men: Dark Phoenix will be grounded in tone. Now before you pull your hair out and scream at the computer screen I think that’s the right approach. What’s worked for the franchise in the past has been stories that feel human and accessible. That doesn’t mean that we can’t have our fire-bird and Shi’ar Empire too, but rather that characters need to be the focus and their reactions to everything that might be going on in their complicated world.
Simon Kinberg says he must “find a way to ground [Dark Phoenix] so it’s not too intergalactic,” stressing that the X-Men movies are “human… and emotional.”
What got lost in Apocalypse was a lack of development for our secondary cast. We had yet another feature that focused strongly on Professor Charles Xavier and Magneto, their relationship took up too much screen time. And Mystique‘s arc was just weird for me as a fan. What I want in this flick is the burgeoning romance between Scott and Jean, but also plenty of material for their returning teammates. Heck this is the cinematic event that I’ve been waiting for since X2: X-Men United. So please talents behind it: make something the kid in me would love.
But what do you think? Are you on board with a grounded tone? Or should the movie go full intergalactic?
