It’s a sad day for fans hoping for another Hulk solo movie to somehow arrive in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s future, as actor Mark Ruffalo puts the final nail in the coffin. Talking to Variety immediately following the Walt Disney Studios Live Action Films panel at this year’s Disney D23 Expo, the actor who’s played the green giant since 2012’s The Avengers says that “a standalone Hulk movie will never happen.”
I want to just make one thing perfectly clear today: A standalone Hulk movie will never happen. Universal has the rights, and for some reason, they don’t know how to play well with Marvel. And, they don’t want to make money.
- Mark Ruffalo
If I’m being honest, I assumed that Marvel and Universal didn’t have a problem when it comes to the Hulk. Given the two Avengers movies he’s been in, the role he’ll play in Thor: Ragnarok and the fact that The Incredible Hulk was made in conjunction with the start of the MCU, it seems strange that the studio aren’t willing to play ball with Marvel (especially given that Sony finally struck a deal regarding Spider-Man). Yes, I can see the potential reasons for not, especially given the effort Disney made to squeeze Paramount out of distribution rights, but at the end of the day it still seems like they’re missing out on a profitable venture. Either way, I am glad that Hulk will still be a part of the MCU, even if that is limited to simply Avengers movies and other team-ups, with Mark Ruffalo growing stronger and stronger as the titanic hero.
But what do you think? Are you sad that we won’t see another solo outing for Hulk? Or are you satisfied with his appearances as part of the Avengers?
