One of the main things that I usually hate about big crossover events is tie-ins, with them more often than not killing the flow of the series’ they affect. Thankfully this hasn’t been the case for the Amazing Spider-Man during Secret Empire, with Peter’s struggle to keep his company out of the hands of Doctor Octopus leading to an exhilarating climax here. Given how evenly matched the two rivals are since Ock’s acquisition of a new body during The Clone Conspiracy, it was interesting to see what tactics each man would use. Not disappointing, the creative team give us a fresh battle for these bitter rivals, as despite there being some familiar spots, there are just as many surprising twists.
Dan Slott has put Peter through a lot over the last few years, with the old web-head never seeming to catch a break. As we draw closer to the latest shake-up at Marvel with the Legacy renumbering, it is inevitable that some major changes are coming for our Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man. Getting the ball rolling for these upcoming tweaks, the writer gives us an epic set of events that sees Peter makes some tough choices to thwart one of his greatest foes. The encounter is made all the more enticing thanks to the clever dialogue the writer injects into his script, with the back and forth banter between Peter and Ock allowing for fabulous atmosphere.
Since joining the creative team, Stuart Immonen has treated us to some tremendous visuals, with the artist delivering some of the most dynamic action sequences. Given the tense nature of this latest encounter between Spidey and Doc Ock, it is fitting to have such tremendous talent working on the book, with the detail being truly exquisite. Despite the action being front and centre, there is still a dramatic flair to these illustrations, with the emotional toll of these events being present on the faces of our characters. Add to this the crisp inks of Wade von Grawbadger and vibrant colours of Marte Garcia, as well as yet another beautifully painted cover from Alex Ross, and there’s very little to fault this comic for visually.
Amazing Spider-Man #31 brings an end to our wall-crawlers Secret Empire tie-in, but at a tremendous cost. Reflecting everything that our character stands for, the creative team pit Spidey up against Doc Ock in one of their most personal battles to date, with the outcome sure to leave readers speculating as we move into a brand new era for the web-slinger.
